Just a single pair of settlers originally founded this Missouri city in 1835. Today, it has grown to a population of well over 18,000. The University of Central Missouri is critical to the way of life in Warrensburg, as it is a major employer, and the attractor of the largest economic driving force in the community in its student body. The University of Central Missouri attracts more than 12,000 students to Warrensburg each year. The school has an NCAA Division II athletics program. The teams are known as the Mules and Jennies, and attending games played by the University is a very popular pastime with the locals.
