Outside of Boston, you won’t find many cities in New England with better restaurants than Portland. Hugo’s is the first name that everyone will mention, but the Portland Lobster Company, Duckfat, Five Fifty-Five, Flatbread Company, and 51 Wharf are all gems. For dessert, there isn’t a better place than Gorgeous Gelato. SMCC doesn’t have the number of dining facilities that nearby USM or any of the state’s larger schools have, so why not grab lunch in Portland after class? Portland is a city on the rise, and offers more culture to students than any other part of Maine. The Maine Mall, the largest mall in the state, is just six miles from SMCC. And across the bay that separates the school from Portland is Old Port, the city’s go-to destination for nightlife. Only three miles is what separates the campus from the port, as well as Hadlock Field, where one of the Boston Red Sox minor league teams plays, and the Portland Expo Arena, where the Boston Celtics’ D-league team plays.
