Hartnell College, a two-year community college, has been noted for its diversity and achieved the recognition of the NAACP. Also popular sites of tourist attraction in Salinas, less than 10 minutes from Hartnell College, are the National Steinbeck Center celebrating the American author John Steinbeck, and the Oldtown downtown shopping center featuring a movie theater, many restaurants, live theater, wine tasting, salons, and the Harvey-Baker House, home to the first mayor of Salinas, which is open seasonally for tours.
