A Local Perspective

New Castle DE
New Castle is a quaint historic town that sits on the banks of the Delaware River. With a population of just over 5,000 people, this town is large enough to have some quality amenities for its citizens, while providing all of the benefits to be found in small town living. The town was settled more than 350 years ago by the Dutch West India Company. After several name and ownership changes, the town came to be called New Castle in 1664. There is a historic district in downtown New Castle that contains several buildings that are hundreds of years old.

There are a handful of colleges within commuting distance of New Castle, including Wesley College and the Delaware Technical Community College. Just to the north in Wilmington is also the Wilmington Campus for the University of Delaware. Some people prefer to live in New Castle as opposed to nearby larger centers, as it can provide a quiet pace and small town atmosphere that just can't be matched in larger centers.

Finding a New Castle Apartment

When to search

The housing situation in New Castle is competitive. If you need an apartment here, you'll find that the early summer is the best time to look. If you start looking in May and continue on through June and July, you'll find the most vacant suites to look at.

Staying in the know

With a competitive atmosphere, a good tip when New Castle apartment hunting is getting your applications in early. Browse the listings daily and try to get in first to look at an apartment and make a good impression before other applicants have a chance to meet with landlords. This helps remove some of the competition from the equation.

Life in New Castle

Transportation

New Castle is a beautiful, historic town, and walking is by far the most pleasurable and the easiest way to get around. The Broad Dyke Canal separates the two large portions of town, so a car can be helpful if you need to commute back and forth between them. A bicycle can also be a practical commuter vehicle for much of the year.

Where to play

As already mentioned, a walk is not only a great way to get around New Castle, but also a great way to see the beautiful and historic architecture. A visit to the Museum and the Court House are also good ways to get introduced to more local history.
