A Local Perspective

Monroe LA
Monroe is a city of roughly 50,000 people in the northern reaches of Louisiana. It has a sister city, West Munroe, on the opposite side of the Ouachita River. Monroe is a historic site, and was originally called Fort Miro. It was also the site of Confederate training camps.

As a small city, the major University is an important part of the local economy. The University of Louisiana at Monroe is one of the city's major employers. It also brings in a large student population each year which help support the local economy. Out of town students may find other opportunities for education as well, as Munroe is home to many museums, including the Chennault Aviation & Military Museum.

Finding a Monroe Apartment

When to search

The apartment vacancies in Monroe run very much on a college city cycle. This means you should start looking before the end of the winter term in order to find a place for the start of the fall semester.

Staying in the know

Because of a steadily declining population, there are a number of open apartments in Monroe. Don't let this make you overconfident. Take applying for an apartment as seriously as you would in New York City, and you should be able to find an apartment that suits your needs to a tee.

Life in Monroe

Transportation

The City of Monroe operates a local bus system that offers both day and night coverage of the city. Night service ends at 10:30 though, so if you plan to be making your way across the city any later, you'll need to arrange for alternate methods of transportation.

Where to play

Explore the Black Bayou Lake Wildlife Refuge to see terrain and wildlife that you can't see anywhere in the country except in the Bayou of Louisiana. The Southern Girls Saloon is a great place to kick back and grab a drink. But the best times in Monroe come at Mardis Gras, where, like much of the state, the city does its very best to throw the best party in the country.
