Las Cruces is a city in the southern reaches of New Mexico. With the Organ Mountains in the background, the city enjoys spectacular views and weather that stays warm year-round. With the largest employer in the region being the government via the White Sands facilities, and the presences of Spaceport America nearby, the aerospace industry clearly plays a crucial part in the local economy. New Mexico State University is the second largest and the oldest university within New Mexico. With programs in many disciplines running up to the doctoral level, NMSU is considered a serious school. The school has a special focus on serving Latino students.
Las Cruces sees its share of snowbirds, which means that looking for an apartment during the winter can be tricky. If you start looking just before it starts to warm up around March or April, you're going to have the best luck.
Show up on time for your appointments with landlords when you're shopping. They have a lot of people interested in their available suites, and if you don't show up on time, they could move on to the next applicant before you even get a chance to look at the apartment.
The Las Cruces public transit system is not especially developed. The ability of the buses to transport bikes however, only adds to the city's reputation as a bike friendly city. In reality, if you've got strong legs and a good bicycle, you should find navigating Las Cruces a breeze.
Heading out to the Organ Mountains can give you access to some of the best climbing and hiking in the state. In Mesilla, just down the road from Las Cruces, you can find some great local art and other keepsakes to send to your friends back home. If you're looking for a late night and some loud music, El Patio is your best bet.
