A Local Perspective

Grand Rapids MI
Only Detroit is a larger city than Grand Rapids in the state of Michigan. With 188,000 people, it is a significant city in and of itself, but it is also part of a much larger metropolitan area that numbers close to a million residents. The town experienced its first boom when gypsum mining became a major industry in the area. A second boom would come when the furniture industry in the city exploded.

Today, health care is the largest industry in the Grand Rapids area. Several of the largest companies in the area have ties to the health care industry, and the city has several top-tier research and care facilities.
