Gilroy’s apartment costs are reasonable for a college student. The average cost of a two bedroom is around $1500, which means that you and your roommate would only have to pay $750 a month (and possibly extra for utilities). If you’re looking to live in a nearby area, neighboring San Juan Batista, Morgan Hill, Aptos, and Watsonville all have higher rents. You can find lower average rents in Hollister, Castroville, and Oak Hill. But Gilroy is a great place to rent; realtors and landlords here know Gavilan’s students are looking around the area for rentals and should be able to accommodate you. Gilroy is best known for its famous garlic festival, which runs at the end of July and usually draws over 100,000 people every year. During the festival you can smell garlic from miles away, and can try garlic on literally anything, from pizza to garlic flavored ice cream. In addition to food, there are also musical performances, a garlic-themed beauty pageant, and arts and crafts. Even when the festival isn’t running, Gilroy is still known as the country’s garlic epicenter. If the smell of it grosses you out, you may have some difficulty living in Gilroy.
