What Makes Charlotte a Great City

Posted · Add Comment

The largest city in North Carolina, Charlotte sprawls across the middle of Mecklenburg County and plays host to one of the most beautiful skylines in America. Brimming with southeastern culture and blessed with a subtropical climate, Charlotte remains a popular destination for families looking to make a change for the better.

Great Charlotte Neighborhoods

Great suburban enclaves and bubbling inner-city communities both thrive in Charlotte. The city’s 199 neighborhoods cover nearly 298 square miles, with Charlotte’s center set directly over the region’s historic St. Catherine’s and Rudisill gold mines. If you like living right in the middle of the city, you’ll probably love the luxury condominiums in Uptown Charlotte.

Ostensibly the city’s most affluent neighborhood, Myers Park sits just south of Queens Road and not far from Charlotte’s spacious Freedom Park. Many of the homes in the area date from the end of the 19th century and originally belonged to historic industry pioneers. Other sought-after Charlotte zones include Dilworth and Eastover.

People who enjoy color frequently settle in Charlotte’s North Davidson neighborhood, also known as NoDa and previously the city’s mill village. Vibrant and interesting, the district’s houses are frequently shades of blue, green and pink, rather than beige.

Things to Do in Charlotte

Charlotte residents enjoy easy access to an array of activities, including extreme outdoor fun at the U.S. National Whitewater Center in Downtown. Visitors and locals cram ziplining, kayaking and the hub’s eponymous whitewater rafting into action-packed outings.

Good food and drink play a central role in Charlotte’s social scene. Head to Soul Gastrolounge for cocktails and small plates in a rustic setting, or visit Pisces Sushi Bar for a selection of fresh fish-based cuisine. Local beer houses include Birdsong Brewing Co., where you can sample peach-infused pale ale and West Coast-style IPA.

Replenish your creative mojo and soak up information at Charlotte’s various galleries and museums. Take classes and learn more about art history at the Mint Museum, which has two locations in the city: one on South Tryon Street and the other on Randolph Road. The Charlotte Museum of History contains numerous exhibits, which document the city’s history and provide a glimpse into North Carolina’s past.

The Weather in Charlotte

Arguably one of the nicest aspects of Charlotte is its climate. If you enjoy all four seasons, you’ll love the cyclical changes in Charlotte’s weather: winter is fairly short and cool; in spring, perennials reliably begin to appear; summer is hot and humid, and the fall brings an abundance of rich color.

Fruit trees, including fig, Bradford pear, peach and cherry trees, do particularly well in Charlotte’s hospitable atmosphere. Residents benefit from a generous growing season, which averages 213 days, leaving them plenty of time to plant and harvest a range of fresh vegetables.

Charlotte Culture

Home to the Carolina Panthers NFL football team and the Charlotte Hornets NBA basketball team, Charlotte also boasts the Charlotte Independence soccer team for a veritable sports trifecta. NASCAR is a major part of Charlotte culture, too: the city hosts multiple NASCAR races throughout the year, which all draw major crowds.

A wealth of performing arts venues, including Opera Carolina, Blumenthal Performing Arts and the Charlotte Ballet regularly host choral recitals, Broadway productions, dance performances and more. You’ll find many ongoing arts-related entities on North Tryon Street and the yearly Carolina Renaissance Festival just north of town.

In 2013, Forbes magazine named Charlotte a top destination for business, and the city remains a firm favorite for growth-oriented companies and entrepreneurs. Diverse and interesting, Charlotte is a beautiful place to rent or buy a house, whether you’re single, a couple or a family.
