Which Factors are you Most Concerned About?

Proximity to Campus

The average square footage of UW Madison apartments varies depending on proximity to campus. Click to see a larger version of the graphic above!

There are many benefits for living close to campus. You get a short drive (or walk) to class, easy access to on-campus activities, and close proximity to that sense of fun and community that UW Madison is famous for!

Unfortunately, the general rule of thumb when it comes to living close to campus is this: The closer the apartment, the more expensive. But it’s important to note that apartments located over 4 miles away from campus are more expensive on average, since they’re targeted towards young professionals and families with greater incomes.

If you’re hoping to live within 1 mile of UW Madison, then be prepared to pay more money for a (slightly) smaller amount of space. Keep in mind that this can be a great trade-off if you spend a lot of time on campus, don’t want to worry about commuting to class, and like living close to your friends and on-campus events.

Square Footage
No one wants to live in an apartment the size of a broom closet! Perhaps you’re looking for a place for you and four other roommates, or perhaps you’d just like to have a roomier place. Whatever your reason for focusing on square footage and bedroom count, it’s important to remember that finding a larger apartment closer to campus will cost significantly more. If you’re looking to find an apartment close to campus, they will be smaller on average.

Looking for a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment with plenty of room? The square footage won’t vary much between the 1 mile and 4 mile zones. Of course, the apartments closest to campus are the smallest, but only by an average of 100 square feet. Not bad, right?

Living solo more your thing? If you’re looking for a spacious studio apartment, then you’ll want to look at places about 2 miles away from campus. These studio apartments have the best square footage on average. Unfortunately, this also makes it one of the most expensive places to get a studio.

Rent prices are determined by a lot of things, but one of the top factors is proximity campus. Click to see a larger version of the graphic above!

Furry Friends
Most people adore their pets and if you have one, or plan on getting one, you’ll want to take your furry friend into consideration when selecting an apartment. If you’re a cat person, then you’re good to go! Cat people have twice the amount of housing options than dog people. Around 42% of rentals are feline friendly, while only 21% dog-friendly. Many buildings also have weight and breed limits for dogs, so keep this in mind if you plan on getting a pet!

Price Tag
When looking for an apartment, you might find that price rules supreme. After all, it’s hard to get something that you can’t afford. But don’t fret! ABODO is here to give you a few tips on how to get the most bang for your buck!

If you’re looking for a cheaper 1 bedroom apartment, you’ll have to live further from campus than most. By living 5 miles away from UW Madison, you’ll save around $4,000 a year compared to those renting apartments within 1 mile of campus. Unfortunately, you’ll be further away from campus life than most.

Maybe you’re looking for a larger 3-bedroom apartment. If this is the case, take a look at places within the 3 mile zone. For each person, rent averages around $413 a month. The cheapest area for 3-bedroom apartments is 5 miles out, averaging around $410 a month. Personally, we at ABODO would pay $3.51 more a month to be 2 miles closer.

Looking for the best deal possible? Then share a 1 bedroom apartment with a roommate around 2-3 miles away from campus. You’ll have to share the space, but that also means sharing the rent. Splitting in the 2-mile zone will give you a $473 average rent price, while living 3 miles away will give you a $394 rent average price.

If you’re searching for a compromise between campus proximity and cost, then take a look at apartments 3 miles away from UW Madison. This area offers closeness to campus at the most reasonable price.
